TOP FASHION TRENDS OF 2022: WHAT’S IN AND WHAT’S OUT

We’ll happily wave goodbye to some fashion trends in 2022 – bike shorts, we’re looking at you.

Sorry, not sorry.

Those trends will be replaced by others.

Want to know which ones they are? Well, you’re in luck because we will be jumping into those right now.

Ready?

Three… two…

2022 Fashion Trends That are Over

Bike Shorts

Now, these babies came into our lives, really, out of nowhere and brought out the cyclist within all of us. They plagued fashion magazines, social media, and pretty much every fashion portal out there.

Worn in a number of different ways, bike shorts were popular in the head-to-toe athleisure aesthetic, with crop tops and sneakers. But they were also paired with blazers for a more tailored feel.

Many jumped on the bike shorts bandwagon, and really, looking back on it now, unless you’re Gigi Hadid, it’s not the most flattering look.

Replacing bike shorts are the more universally flattering boxer shorts.

boxing shorts

Boxer shorts are generally made of silk or cotton and give off an effortless, summery feel without being, ahem, so restrictive.

There are a couple of ways we’ll be seeing this look. Either matching it with a bodysuit underneath or as a matching set with a shirt.

Whether sporty, casual or a more formal look, paired with a blazer, boxer shorts are, at least from our perspective, a welcome versatile replacement.

Massive Sneakers

While there are residual leftovers of this trend, with platforms sticking around a little while longer, we will be seeing much less of the oversized Balenciaga Triple S-style sneaker, and others like it.

The overly exaggerated statement sneaker is definitely on its way out. Instead, we’ll shift towards scaled down sneakers on shelves that designers like Prada, Chanel, and Louis Vuitton are dishing out.

Skinny Jeans

Obviously, this has been in the works for years now, and it’s well known that stylish millennials would rather stick needles in their eyes than wear skinny jeans.

We’re going to see a lot more relaxed and oversized styles, straight leg, boyfriend jeans as an ode to the 1990s.

That being said, not all of us are ready to let go of the skinny leg jean – and that’s OK. If you have a signature style, you know that skinnies suit your body type; you should ride that train right to the last station.

That’s what we’re doing.

Because we’re not always about jumping on every trend and leaving behind a true and tested wardrobe bestie that’s been with us for years.

We’re loyal like that.

Fitted Blazers

Now you cannot consider yourself a through and through fashionista without having a fitted Balmain blazer (or a damn good copy) hanging in your wardrobe. But those days are apparently behind us.

Instead, you’ll be turning to the oversized, borrowed-from-your-dad blazer. One such designer that’s whipping them out is Jacquemus. Side note, we’d love to see that paired with their infamous tiny bags – if nothing else, just for a laugh.

Now, if you aren’t ready for the oversized blazer just yet, Mugler has created a hybrid of the two, with a fitted waist but oversized shoulders.

See, there’s your cake, feel free to eat it too.

The best of both worlds, if you will.

Lace Bodysuits

This lingerie-ish style, often paired with jeans and a blazer or even heavy knitwear, is also on the outs.

So, what are we looking at as a replacement?

Well, cue the Bridgerton instrumental pop song covers because corsets and corsetry are going to be huge this autumn and winter.

From Vivienne Westwood, Gucci and Versace, corsets are popping up in unexpected places, like dresses and even puffer jackets.

Square-Toed Shoes

Thank the mighty lord above, or whoever is responsible for this transitioning out of our trend realm.

Look; we’ve been impatiently waiting for this day to come, so we can just come out and say it:

Buh-bye.

Now, don’t get too excited, they’re not all gone, but those Bottega styles that leave about three centimetres of ugly squareness in front of your toes are out.

They’re done. They’re dusted.

You can’t see us, but we’re waving goodbye. Enthusiastically.

This style, which is mainly featured in summer footwear, like mules, has seen a shift towards a pointed toe or an almond toe shoe.

Basic Evening Dresses

Now the LBD will never go out of style.

Never.

It’s everyone’s go-to, and that’s standard. Pre-pandemic, we saw a lot of elegant, sophisticated looks, very simple, very understated.

Sometimes basic.

Sometimes drab?

Post-pandemic evening looks are somewhat (read a lot) different.

You’ve got sequences. You’ve got glitter. There’s also neon.

There are feathers all over the place.

It’s basically a New Year’s Eve party all the time.

Now, if you’re not all about the peacock look, we understand, but what you can do, is bring some of these elements into your accessories while still keeping your outfit simple and classy.

New Designer Pieces

Whether it’s taking a new look at your budget or just not understanding why you should invest in brand new Y2K pieces, when you can just dig out your old ones, vintage is back, baby.

True, vintage was never really out of style, but at the moment, we’re seeing it worn by celebrities everywhere.

Luxury fashion price increases are getting ridiculous, with some pieces going up as much as 25% in one go – ahem, Chanel – so many people are drawing a line in the sand.

Vintage gives you a unique aesthetic at a more affordable price point. And there is also the major aspect of sustainability that it draws upon.

As avid lovers of our fine planet, we’re all about the vintage.

Final Word

Whether you’re dead set on staying on top of the latest trends, or love upgrading your signature style, these are the trends that we will be seeing a lot less of.

And, we’ve also thrown in what you will be seeing a lot more of on store shelves and online.

Which trend will you gladly be saying goodbye to?
